This “air-gap control” variable attenuator is commonly used as a verification tool and for temporary adjustment of the attenuation value. Different attenuation value can be maintained. To achieve a very accurate attenuation value, installing the variable attenuator accompanying with the power meter is recommended.
Bulkhead-type Variable Attenuator

The Bulkhead-type variable attenuator can be installed at the distribution panels or connecting two patchcords to become in-line attenuator application. By fine tuning the air gap width, the user can easily adjust the attenuation value by hand when using in conjunction with power meter.

EXFO FVA-60B portable variable attenuator performs well in both laboratory and field environment. There are three attenuation display modes for this attenuator: (1) Absolute (including insertion loss) , (2) Relative (in reference to 0.00 dB level), (3) Xx+ b (arbitrary value). Its program mode is particularly useful to accelerated bit-error-rate (BER) testing as cycles through a repeatable sequence of up to 60 attenuation steps, pausing for one second or up to 60 hours at a time can be setted.
